Tsubuyori by Nakagoshi in Kanazawa, JP

3 major Japanese sweets locations

There are 3 major confectionery regions with long lasting history, Kyoto ( 京都 ) , Matsue ( 松江 ) and Kanazawa ( 金沢 ). Kanazawa is my born place, although I didn’t live there. My parents were also born there. Both home bases were in city center area of Kanazawa. Thus whenever I visited at my Granpa’s and Granma’s home, they made my younger brother & sister and myself welcome with Kanazawa’s local and traditional confectionery with wonderful sweet taste. Then since 2015, I’ve lived in Kyoto city. Very lucky situation that I can enjoy the nice JP sweets varieties. But unfortunately, I’m not familiar with that in Matsue yet. Hope I can visit there to enjoy the local unprecedented special JP sweet for my in Matsue.

Souvenir ( Omiyage ) from Kanazawa

When I went to Hokuriku ( 北陸 ) region for business travel last time, before I went back to home in Kyoto, I stopped over at Kanazawa to buy souvenir for my wife ( and myself). Yes, I miss very much the wider varieties of JP sweets there. The convenient situation that we can go the large souvenir floor in JR Kanazawa station. I can find our famous local JP sweets shops. This time, I selected two pastries by Nakagoshi ( 中越 ).

Nakagoshi Package

In the show case, I found out two types of cakes made with chestnut. One is Tsubuori ( つぶより ). Another one is ( kuri pie ).

Basically I love any cakes with chestnut, as I wrote the article about Kurinomi pie created by Kashin Ohsuga in Hikone city ( 彦根市 ), Shiga prefecture ( 滋賀県 ).

I didn’t know such chestnut cakes in Kanazawa. They are not typical traditional confectionary in Kanazawa. However both the taste is really nice.

** Tsubuyori **

We can see the one whole chestnut inside. The aspect is covered by sweet bean paste or gyuhi (a kind of rice cake made from glutinous rice or glutinous rice flour).

** kuri pie **

Same as Tsubuori, one whole sweet chestnut are located at center portion inside. The middle layer consist of some white paste (rise or beans). Then the outer side is western style puff pastry. It’s nice mixture of the way of production from Japan and Western country. I really love such nice combination, flavor and sweet taste.
